MIMR Band Chat: Pool Sharks

One of many new discoveries on MIMR this year are Indie-Rockers Pool Sharks and as they get ready to hit Manchester this saturday courtesy of Deco Records latest gig, we spoke to the band to get the lowdown ahead of the show.

MIMR: It’s pleasure to have you on the blog, what’s the latest with the band?

PS: The pleasure is all ours. We’ve just released our single ‘Like This To Die Instantly’ which has been picked up by BBC Intro west Yorks and we were on 6 music not too long ago. Still counts if it’s at 4am on Monday morning right? We’ve got a couple more singles to come out in 2019 too and plenty Leeds shows to enjoy. We’re just writing our next batch of tunes at the moment and enjoying playing.

MIMR: How best would you describe your sound and what are your main influences?

PS: The direction we’ve been heading in is a type of frantic, indie rock with some dissonance and some saccharine hooks. Parquet Courts, Protomartyr, Talking Heads and more Parquet Courts are all recent influences, but there’s definitely a healthy amount of 2000’s indie in there. We’ve been trying to pioneer the genre ‘Dwarf Cream Wave’ but sadly it’s not picked up yet.

MIMR: Your opening up for our good friends Deco Records this coming saturday, what’s your best thing about playing live?

PS: The escapism of it – performing brings a buzz which elevates you out of the mundane of day to day life. Doesn’t matter if its at a bar playing to sound guy or to a big crowd. We try to give that feeling to people when they come and see us. Playing live is also a great testbed for new material. You can get all these ideas between you about what your best songs are and the audience can rip them up in 3 minutes. They can also give you confidence in ideas you were going to abandon too.

MIMR: If you could be on tour with any band, past or present, who would it be and why?

PS: Probably Talking Heads. Cos you’d get to watch Talking Heads alot. You’d probably also get to bed at a reasonable time as well.

MIMR: Thanks for being on MIMR, all the best for rest of the year. How can people follow you on social media?

PS: You can catch us on Instagram at Pool__Sharks (2 underscores ya know), Facebook at /poolsharkies and Twitter @pool_sharks. We’re on Spotify as well for those of you who listen to music. At some point we’ll make those consistent with each other. But it is not this day.
